John Whitt - Choir Director/Organist

John Whitt has been a part of church music since the age of six, playing the piano for the Men’s  Bible Class at Second Baptist Church in Petersburg, Virginia, where he grew up. In high school he was organist for Protestant and  Catholic services at the main post chapel center at Fort Lee, Va., and met his wife, April, while in college, directing the choir at Grace Lutheran Church in Durham, NC. John, April, and daughter, Carter, have been Atlantans since 1994, making St.Bartholomew’s their parish home. Carter is a junior at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, and April is an Astronomer with the Fernbank Science Center.

The Episcopal church has been John’s confirmed home for twenty-five years; almost twice that in spirit. John brings with him a wealth of experience in performing and conducting choral music and organ playing. In addition to beginning his third year as Artistic Director of the Atlanta Schola Cantorum, for the past ten years he as led the Schola Cantorum of St. Bartholomew’s,  singing Compline every other Sunday during “academic” time. He holds a Master of Music from Westminster Choir College and a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

John has been organist and choirmaster in churches of diverse sizes and has directed multi-faceted music programs. He has performed with professional as well as church- affiliated choruses and studied conducting with such notables as Robert Porco, Joseph Flummerfelt, David Willcocks, Frauke Haasemann, and James Litton. Organ teachers have included Rudolf Kremer, Fenner  Douglass and Mark Brombaugh. He is a member of the Royal School of Church Music, the Association of Anglican Musicians, and the American Guild of Organists.

With a wide variety of interests, John also works as an independent photographer, and as a Graphic Designer with AlphaGraphics in Duluth. His interest in the arts and visual communication throughout history, from ancient manuscripts and calligraphy to modernday advertising, spills over into his approach to worship, seeking to incorporate not just sound, but all the human senses into a cohesive experience of God’s glory and presence. He is happy to be responsible for the sound portion of that at St. Bede’s!

Pipe Organ

St. Bede's is blessed with one of the more unique and distinctive pipe organs in the United States. It is a relatively small, but very artistic instrument in the German style. The artistry is obvious in both the quality of sound it produces and the notable craftsmanship of woodwork and embellishments. In 1992, Richards, Fowkes & Co. of Chattanooga, Tennessee was contracted by St. Bede's to design and install a pipe organ. As with many large projects this one took on a life of its own over the next seven years. By 1999, St. Bede's dedicated the new organ in what at the time was the recently constructed nave.
