parent volunteers.
St. Bede’s employs two nursery workers under the direction of the

G
odly Play, our Christian Education curriculum for preschool and
primary children is a visible form of the prayer we say for the newly
baptized: “Sustain them O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an
inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and persevere, a
spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all
your works.” The Godly Play classroom is a place where these gifts and
graces are encouraged and nourished.
Godly Play is both an educational program and a program for spiritual
formation. The beauty of the program rests upon these foundations: a
deep love and respect for Scripture, a deep love and respect for
children and their individual spiritual journeys, and an emphasis on
building Christian community. This year we have added one more Godly
Play classroom for a total of three Godly Play classes, one for three
and four your old children (Godly Play I), one for kindergarteners and
first graders (Godly Play II), and one for children in the second and
third grade (Godly Play III).
*The two younger classes
(Godly Play I & II), at the conclusion of Sunday School, will remain
with their teachers for playground time (weather permitting) and music
during the first half of the 10:45 service. The children will be
brought into the nave at the Peace to rejoin their parents. Parents of
children in Godly Play III class should pick up their child at his/her
classroom at the conclusion of Sunday School.
Contributions to acquire new Godly Play materials for our classroom
are always welcome!
“Seasons of the Spirit” is the new curriculum for our fourth
and fifth graders this year. The lessons are based on the Revised
Common Lectionary (the series of scripture lessons read in worship
each Sunday) and on the themes of the liturgical season. This
enthusiastic and energetic guide will explore Bible stories through
imagination, arts, games and drama. The materials also make
connections with current events and within a global context.
The children in the Intermediate classes also enjoy regular gatherings
for fun and friendship on Sunday afternoons. Our first Intermediate
Event will be:
Sunday, September 14th. We will leave after church
for Lake Lanier Water Park. The schedule of other events will
be printed in later editions of the Scroll.
SPECIAL
UNITS
In addition to the “Seasons of the Spirit” Curriculum, several
additional units may be offered. They will feature guest teachers and
provide the children with special hands-on learning opportunities.
A unit on Godly Play, featuring the Parables.
A unit on Prayer, where the children make their own prayer beads,
are instructed on using the beads, and writing their own prayers
along with experiences in guided meditation.
A unit focusing on the dramatization of a Bible story to be
presented to another Sunday School class.
A unit on Sacraments that might include: Teachings on the
Sacraments, making an altar cloth, making and baking eucharistic
bread, and instructed eucharist and teachings on baptism and
healing.
A unit on saints encouraging the children to relate to the Saints in
a concrete way with special emphasis on St. Bede and St. Francis of
Asissi and some “modern” saintly figures from the Episcopal Church.
A unit on the multicultural images of Jesus, teachings on the
different images of Jesus and opportunity for the children to create
their own images.
ourney to Adulthood is a program of spiritual formation for young
people. The goals of the program are to celebrate the transition from
youth to adulthood, explore our faith heritage, build community and
friendships, and deal with issues that are important to teenagers. The
program includes Sunday morning classes and Sunday afternoon or
evening activities. Events such as retreats, lock-ins and mission
trips are planned throughout the year. The youth are invited to be
leaders in planning and developing youth events and in other areas of
parish life and ministry.
I
n the Journey to Adulthood program, pilgrimage has become a central
feature in our ministry to young people. At the end of the fourth
year, the J2A group travels to a “distant land” in search of God and
their own destinies. Our youth have completed 2 pilgrimage journeys.
In 2001, the first St. Bede’s group to go on such a journey traveled
to South Dakota to Borderlands, an Episcopal retreat. In that remote
territory, the youth spent time exploring nature, the relationship of
the Native Americans to the land and the spirituality of that culture.
Through that experience they came to know more about themselves and
each other. Upon return, they shared with the parish their own
thoughts on pilgrimage and brought to the youth program an enthusiasm
not seen at St. Bede’s in many years.
This summer, the second group to go on a pilgrimage traveled to
England. Their journey took them to London, Canterbury, and the
monastery of Jarrow, where St. Bede lived and worked and to the holy
island of Lindisfarme.
The opportunity to travel, to go away from the familiar into the
unknown with one’s peers and spiritual advisors is an unforgettable
journey toward adulthood. We are so fortunate here at St. Bede’s to
provide the leadership and parish support to enable our young people
to undertake such a unique challenge and the tradition continues this
year with all new classes and J2A teachers!
