A Poet in the Camp:
A Lenten Journey with Etty Hillesum
Etty Hillesum was in her twenties when she volunteered to accompany her fellow Jews to a Nazi concentration camp. Fed by her spiritual practices, Etty ministered to those in need, counseled against hatred, and wrote letters expressing her deep love for God.
Though we are not in a concentration camp, we are facing unprecedented challenges and wondering whether we have the strength not just to endure but to be Christ-like. Etty assures us we can, pointing to specific practices that invite us to be “poets in the camp”—people who can offer peace, comfort, and even courage during times of great suffering.
As we turn our faces toward Jerusalem, join us as we sit with this Jewish mystic who wrote of having her body broken and given to others.
Praying with the wisdom of Etty Hillesum, scripture, poetry, the labyrinth and with a visual expression.
